UFC 76 Comments

UFC 76: Knockout
This was one of the best ppv events the UFC has put on in recent memory with two huge upsets. This card demostrated why rankings are useless in mixed martial arts. All the fights on the televised card were full of action.

Chuck Liddell vs. Keith Jardine
The Iceman looked great in the first round landing alot of good shots hurting Jardine on a few occasions. Jardine did not look comfortable at all but connected with some leg kicks. If Chuck had pushed the pace more he could have finished it in the first round. At the start of the second Jardine looked much more confident. Stringing together combinations with punches and many leg kicks. Towards the middle of the round, Jardine dropped Chuck with a right but Liddell gets up quickly. Jardine continues to outstrike Liddell leaving him with a huge bruise on his left side. Jardine takes the decision and Wanderlei looks as upset as upset as "The Iceman".

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Forrest Griffin
In the worst performance of his career Shogun Rua looked like garbage for three rounds. By the middle of the second round he had his hands down gasping for air. Forrest looked stronger, stuffed takedowns and outstruck Rua. Forrest ended the fight at the end of the third by rear naked choke. Not the best week for Chute Boxe.

Kazuhiro Nakamura Vs. Lyoto Machida
This was a good fight. Machida impressed me by comming out aggresive. I expected Lyoto to come out with his usual slow karate point fighting style but he looked good. He almost finished Nakamura many times but Kaz is one tough Japanese dude. Machida wins with an impressive decision.

Diego Sanchez vs. Jon Fitch
This was one of those fights were the bigger stronger guy won. Diego Sanchez had Fitch in two really tight submissions that he got out of. Fitch controlled Diego the whole fight long winning him the decision. My question is what do you reward more, applying or escaping a submission. Fitch didn't do too much damage just stayed on top of Diego. Either educate these judges on ground fighting or scrap the ten point must system and create another scorring system from scratch.

Tyson Griffin vs. Thiego Tavarez
This was a back and forth war. If they were fighting under Pride rules I would had Tavarez winning because he landed a flying knee that hurt Tyson which was the best strike of the fight. Under boxing's stupid ten point must system scoring criteria they gave the fight to Griffin. At least they should have scored a draw but the UFC needs contendors and Tyson Griffin wins by another split decsion.
The Aftermath
This results of this card made of mess of the light heavyweight division's title picture. Shogun was expected to fight Rampage after beating Griffin and Chuck was supposed o fight Wanderlei to see who got the title shot after. The only thing is certain is that Rampage Jackson is now the no. 1 fighter in the division after that only the mma gods know.
