UFC Fight Night 11 Comments

UFC Fight Night 11: Florian vs Thomas
UFC Fight Night 11 was great. Good fights and almost as important it was free. Every fight on the televised card ended in KO or submission. NO BORING FIGHTS!!!!! Also Spike had some technical diffculties during the first round of Sell vs Quarry. It was strange at first but as the round went on I enjoyed the fact that there was no one talking. I saw the action and was able to discern for myself who was getting the better of the exchanges. Overall it was a great card especially since theres a ppv a couple of days a way. The UFC is spoiling us with a lot of good fights in a short amount of time. Hey Dana saturate the market all you want buddy I need my MMA!!

Kenny Florian va. Din Thomas
This was a good fight. Kenny Florian came out looking confident. After a couple of exchanges standing Din Thomas looked like the better striker. Joe Rogan and his sidekick spent the fight talking about how Florian's Muay Thai was good and how he trained in Thailand while Din was getting the better of the standup. While Florian was circling and backing up, out of frustration Din mocked "Ken-flo" by jogging the other way. Like if he heard Din say something about his mama Florian came after him and began to pound on Thomas. The end came when Din Thomas went for a takedown and apparently injured his knee. Florian GnP Din and then took his back and got the rear-naked choke for a first round submission win.

Chris Leben vs. Terry Martin
Great first round. Leban actually looked in good shape and was moving around the ring instead going straight forward. Martin had the better power but Leben countered well and used good footwork to avoid many of the strikes. This fight was a slow paced war with each fighter taking and giving shots. Both fighters seemed to slow towards the end of the first round, Terry Martin looked like he needed an oxygen tank. The finish came in the third round when Martin rocked Leben with two solid shots making him stumble backwards like a drunk guy trying to Salsa. Chris Leben blinked and came in firing to Martin's jaw making him go sleepy time without the pillow. Leben wins by spectacular KO.

Nate Diaz vs Junior Assuncao
Junior Assunco was talking major trash before this fight. He claimed that he wasen't impressed with Nate and that his Jiu-jiutsu was far greater. I guess Junior needs to give his black belt back and wear a strip of tin foil instead because Nate Diaz submitted Junior and made it look easy. First Diaz stunned Junior with a flurry of punches than got the guillotine for the finish. Nate Diaz showing his big bro how to end a fight.

Nate Quarry vs. Peter "Drago" Sell
This was the fight was the one with the wonderful technical difficulties (not sarcastic) at the start. Sell and Quarry trading strikes with Drago getting the better of the exchanges. Sell bloodied Quarry and managed to drop him during the fight. It looked like Sell was on his way to winning a decision. Thats when the MMA gods with sympathy for Quarry, for getting killed by Franklin, having surgery on his spine and also being kicked out of Team Quest decided to do him a favor. Pete Sell in the third round looked hella gased carrying his hands down low and Quarry countered and bounced punches of his chin making Drago's brain go on vacation. Quarry wins by devastaing KO in round 3.

Final Thoughts
Even though this card had UFC's B level fighters and TUF alums the fights were competive and entertaning. The UFC is smart for placing these up and coming fighters who they are trying to showcase on free tv. Even TUF noobies had to be entertained with their guys Florian, Leban, and Quarry from season one getting victories.

What effect did these fights have on the divisions these fighters belong to?

Kenny Florian
Even though Florian loss in the lightweight title fight to Sean Sherk, if the champ is stripped he has to be concered the no. 1 contender. Also, the UFC can also postpone the title fight and have Florian fight Spencer Fisher to see who'll get the shot at the eventual champ B.J. Penn.

Chris Leben and Terry Martin
If Martin would of won he might have been the no. 1 contender after the Silva-Franklin fight by default. The UFC Middleweight division is weak and with Denis Kang going to K1 and with Matt Lindland roaming the Earth like Kane from Kung-Fu the future is bleak. How many times will the UFC let Rich Franklin get destroyed by Anderson Silva? When Dana Signed Anderson I'll bet everything in my nephews piggy bank (i'm broke and he has a very large piggy bank) that he had no idea that Anderson Silva would be this dominant. As for Leban, he will continue to be used as a gate keeper for the division if he collects enough wins he might earn a rematch later... way later down the line. Silva destroyed him so bad that he's gonna have to obliterate 7 to 8 straight opponents to get a shot.

Nate Diaz
This was a good showcase bout for Nate but it left me wanting to see more. He teased us with his standup when he made Junior Assuncao do the bitter beer face as he was getting hit. He needs to be given opponents that will test him to see what he's made of. The future looks good for Nick Diaz's little bro as long as he stays off the weed.

Nate Quarry and Peter "Drago" Sell
This fight has little implications for the middleweight division. Drago's stock dropped hard after this fight. If he wasen't the welterweight champs buddy he might have been fighting on an Indian Reservation near you. I don't buy the UFC's bullshit that if you give an exciting fight you'll be back, case in point, Nick Diaz. As for Quarry, if he got the shit kicked out of him by pretty boy math teacher, dummies co-author, and new tv host Rich Franklin (can you tell I hate math) how can he survive with the man that gave him an unauthorized nose job in the Octagon? Quarry better quit while he's ahead before he gets a date with face re-arranger Dr. Anderson Silva.
